Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a toddler when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to take on jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. In the midst of only two years in school she left for the acting career. It was not without difficulties. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to secure jobs on stage. After a brief time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. There she was able to earn a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
